Plans were recently unveiled to add an additional area code to the Sacramento region. Starting on February 10th, callers will be required to dial "916" before completing their call. (They will not have to dial "1").

The new area code (279) will be assigned to newly assigned telephone numbers starting on March 10th. The California Public Utilities Commission explained the change was due to aggressive population growth, and the proliferation of cell phones.

The "916" area code currently serves parts of El Dorado, Solano, Yolo, Placer, and Sacramento counties, and is assigned to approximately 8 million telephone numbers.
